Often times whenever society speaks of the south we automatically think of the civil rights movement, “Rosa Parks, Medgar Evers and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Alone with the racist attitudes African American endured from whites southern and the laws of the Jim Crow and the Segregation era. Although the civil rights movement was and still is an essential and massive part of the south, another side of the African American community also exist “Life”.
This novel tells a story of an extraordinary African American country woman “Katie Mae Rogers” who lived in the deep rule south, Lowndes County, Alabama in the mid forties. She lived with her parents and siblings the early part of her life. Afterward she’s truss into accepting the fact she had become all but an orphan, then unbeknown gives her adult life permission to commence. Katie Mae’s woes and blessing takes her from the reddish clay roads of Lowndes County to Montgomery, Alabama, Chicago and a small desolate town up north by the name of Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Once you’ve read the first chapter you’ll find yourself sneaking peeks of what’s going to happen next. It will have you questioning yourself on levels you may not have ever thought of. You may even possibly desire to reevaluate “your family” life and present circumstances.
How she chose to forgive well as becoming the overwhelming provider for her family and encountering strangers only to support them is remarkable. It will take you on an honest, innocent, romantic, blissful, sinful and bitter sweet comedy that will leave you wanting to never get off this dumbfounding, spiritual roller coaster.
